PAST AND PRESENT OF MARSHALL COUNTY IOWA, 1912

A. H. Baie

The record of A. H. Baie, an enterprising and highly respected farmer of State Center Township, demonstrates that where there is a will there is a way and that obstacles to success may be overcome by courage and self-reliance.

Mr. Baie was born in State Center Township, Marshall County, 6 April, 1865, and he has lived in this locality all his life, having been an active participant in its great development, practically all of which has taken place during his lifetime. He has always followed farming. He is the son of Andreas Baie, who was born in Germany on 19 April, 1828, and who is now residing in the town of State Center, this county, advanced in years, he having been one of the well known early settlers here. He married Wilhelmena Meisterschmidt, who was born in Brunswick, Germany, 25 December, 1830 and who came to DeKalb county, Illinois in 1856 and died in State Center Township, this county, 5 April,1902. Eight children were born to Mr and Mrs Andreas Baie, namely: Albert born, 30 March, 1860, lives in State Center Township; Mrs Emma Hayne, born 18 December, 1861, residing in State Center, Iowa; Edward, born 6 July, 1863, lives in Spokane, Washington; A. H. of this review; Henry, born 26 February, 1867, lives in Oklahoma; the oldest child, named Rosetta, was born 7 March,1859 and died 19 December 1880; Elnora, born 26 February, 1869,died on 23 February, 1882; Minnie, born on 23 May, 1876, died on 15 February, 1882.

A. H. Baie was married on 20 February, 1894 to Susie Barry,who was born in Clinton, Iowa, 4 July, 1871, the daughter of William Barry, who was born in Ireland and who is at present making his home with his daughter, Mrs. Baie, in Eden Township. He married Maggie Mulharren, who was a native of Ireland, and whose death occurred on 21 October, 1910. She was a good woman and had a host of friends, as has also Mr. Barry. They were the parents of three daughters and two sons, namely: James is living near Rhodes; Edward lives in Boone, Iowa; Mrs John York lives in State Center Township; Katie lives in Polk County, Iowa; Mrs Baie, wife of the subject, also has four half brothers.The Barry family came to Marshall County about 1874.

Three sons and two daughters have been born to Mr and Mrs Baie, namely; Alta, born 11 November, 1894, died 2 May, 1889; Leo,born 12 May, 1898, lives at home; Ida, born 21 April, 1900; Elmer, born 7 April, 1902; Raymond, born 8 October, 1904; they are all attending school at Rhodes.

Politically, Mr. Baie is independent, preferring to vote for the best man rather than the party. Mrs. Baie is a member of the Catholic Church at Rhodes. They have a cozy, well-furnished home, in which is to be found the best literature of the times.They take a widespread interest in all things that tend to up build the community. Their farm of one hundred and twenty acres in Eden Township is well improved and is well cultivated and very productive.

BURIAL TUESDAY FOR LEO BAIE, CANCER VICTIM

Rhodes (Special) --- Cancer was reported as the cause of death of Leo A. Baie, 53, of Rhodes at 5:15 a.m., Saturday in St. Thomas Mercy Hospital where he had been a patient five days.

He had been ill three months. Services will be held in charge of the Rev. R. J. Axen at St. Joseph's Catholic Church at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Graveside rites by American Legion Post 456 of Rhodes will precede burial at St. Joseph's cemetery.

Baie was treasurer of Rhodes and secretary of the Rhodes consolidated school and was prominent in business and in civic organizations. He was engaged in carpentry and in the insurance business.

The son of Andy and Susan Berry Baie, he was born at Albion 12 May, 1898, graduated from Rhodes High School and attended Loras College in Dubuque. He lived in Rhodes the last 50 years.

On 27 Sept, 1921, he was married to Lucille Goodman. He was a veteran of World War I.

Survivors are his widow, mother, a daughter, Mrs Robert Banzhaf of Marshalltown, a son, Leland of Rhodes, a sister, Ida Baie of Rhodes, two brothers, Elmer of Rhodes and Raymond of Waterloos and two grandchildren. His father preceded him in death.

The rosary will be recited at the family home at 8 p.m. Monday. Bearers will be George Gauch, Charles Blink, Tom Malloy, Russell Buck, Joey Malechek and Marion Wendel. The arrangements are in charge of the Boyd-Nickell funeral home in Baxter.
