Marshalltown City Directory (partial)

----------------------

On 20 April, 1918, at 112 Colonial Rooms, on Water Street, in Vancouver BC John Copeland signed up for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force. He gave his birthdate as 17 Feb, 1870, Birthplace as Cornwall, England, his next of kin as his mother Mrs Grace Copeland, Mylor Bridge, Cornwall, England. He was a blacksmith and had served 10 years in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry and 10 years as a Railway Service Guard

He was 5'5" tall, had a ruddy complexion with blue eyes and grey hair with a 37" chest. He was Methodist. He had a Lyphoma over his left scapula and a scar at the base of his left thumb.

I don't think I've come across a WWI military registration where a man has given his correct age and my guess is that John misrepresented his age so that he would be able to join up.

The BMD lists a John Copelan in the Feb-Mar-Apr birth index for Falmouth District. The IGI lists him as being Christened in Falmouth in June of 1862, the 1881 England census also lists him as being born in 1862, son of William and Grace. On top of all that, I've found no other records showing a John Copeland born in 1870.

A John Copeland, laborer, is listed in the 1911 Comox, British Columbia census. He was born in Feb, 1862 in England, emigrated to Canada in 1900. He was Anglican, married and working as a laborer in a Comox, British Columbia Lumber Camp
